## Summary

In today's modern society, the demand for petroleum-based chemicals and materials continues to grow despite the dwindling of their fossil resources. As a result, alternative energy sources and valuable chemical resources must be implemented urgently. Lignocellulosic biomass is the most abundant and bio-renewable biomass on earth and presents itself as a sustainable platform for the production of bio-based chemicals and polymers. This critical review by Furkan Isikgor and C. Remzi Becer provides insights into the potential of lignocellulosic biomass as an alternative platform to fossil resources. The review presents over 200 value-added compounds that can be derived from lignocellulosic biomass by various treatment methods along with their references. Additionally, lignocellulosic biomass-based polymers and their commercial importance are reported mainly in the frame of these compounds. The article aims to draw a map of lignocellulosic biomass-derived chemicals and synthetic polymers while revealing their scope in today's modern chemical and polymer industry. With this information, it is clear that lignocellulosic biomass holds great promise as a sustainable source for producing essential chemicals and materials in our ever-evolving world.
