The COVID-19 pandemic has led to intensified preventive measures such as lockdowns and social distancing, which have significantly increased feelings of social isolation among young adults. This discrepancy between their social needs and the provisions of the social environment has also been associated with situational loneliness, a risk factor for depressive symptoms. Previous research has suggested that vulnerable young adults often turn to online platforms like Reddit for support, as it provides a comfortable space for individuals to seek mental health help anonymously. To further understand the impact of the pandemic on mental health, this study aimed to identify and analyze depression-related discussions on loneliness subreddits during the COVID-19 outbreak. By utilizing logistic regression and topic modeling techniques, researchers examined these discussions both before and during the pandemic. The results revealed a significant increase in the volume of depression-related topics discussed during the pandemic, including mental health, social interaction, family, and emotions. Interestingly, there was a shift in dominant topics discussed on these subreddits. Prior to the pandemic, dating-related discussions were prevalent, while during the pandemic there was an increased focus on online interaction and community support. This suggests that individuals expressed a greater need for online social support during times of heightened isolation. These findings highlight the potential of social media platforms like Reddit as a window into monitoring public mental health. By analyzing depression-related dialogues on these platforms researchers can gain valuable insights into the challenges faced by individuals during crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. In future studies this approach could be clinically validated and used to design effective surveillance systems to address mental health issues during similar crises. Overall this study emphasizes the importance of understanding and addressing mental health concerns during times of crisis. To better understand how individuals are coping with these challenges, researchers have turned to online platforms like Reddit as an avenue for infoveillance – monitoring public mental health through digital conversations. This study aimed to identify and analyze depression-related discussions on loneliness subreddits during the COVID-19 outbreak in order to gain valuable insights into the impact of the pandemic on mental health.

Methods
