During the last decade, South Korea has experienced significant growth in its research output, as evidenced by an increase in the world share of publications in the Science Citation Index database. However, while the country's publication performance has been impressive, its citation performance still lags behind. To gain a better understanding of the intellectual structure of science and technology (S&T) in Korea, this study conducted a social network analysis of journal-journal citation data using ten Korean SCI journals as seed journals. The findings reveal that Korean SCI journals primarily serve as publication venues rather than research channels or sources of information for national scientists. These journals play a crucial role in providing Korean scholars with access to international scientific communities and helping them overcome entry barriers. However, it is worth noting that there are no citation relations based on their Korean background. Based on these results, the authors aim to draw policy implications that can enhance Korea's research potential. By addressing the gap between publication and citation performance, policymakers can focus on strategies to improve the visibility and impact of Korean research within the global scientific community. South Korea has done a lot of research and written many papers. But not many people are using or talking about those papers. The Korean journals are mostly used to publish papers, but not for citing other papers. These journals help Korean scholars connect with scientists from other countries. South Korea's Growing Research Output: A Social Network Analysis of Science and Technology

In the last decade, South Korea has experienced a significant growth in its research output. This is evidenced by an increase in the world share of publications in the Science Citation Index (SCI) database. Despite this impressive performance, however, South Korea’s citation performance still lags behind other countries. To gain a better understanding of the intellectual structure of science and technology (S&T) within South Korea, researchers conducted a social network analysis using ten Korean SCI journals as seed journals. The findings provide valuable insights into how Korean SCI journals function within the larger scientific landscape and what strategies can be implemented to improve their visibility and impact on global scientific advancements.

Methodology

The study employed journal-journal citation data from SCI for its social network analysis. Ten Korean SCI journals were chosen as seed journals to represent S&T activities in South Korea between 2006 and 2016. The authors used two metrics to measure journal-level performance: publication volume (PV) and citation volume (CV). Additionally, they calculated four measures for each journal pair: number of citations received; number of citations given; total number of citations exchanged; and normalized reciprocal citation ratio (NRCR).

Findings

The results reveal that Korean SCI journals primarily serve as publication venues rather than research channels or sources of information for national scientists. These journals play an important role in providing access to international scientific communities while helping scholars overcome entry barriers into those communities. However, there are no citation relations based on their Korean background – indicating that domestic researchers are not citing each other’s work at a higher rate than foreign counterparts do with one another’s work.

Implications
